A cleaning is the appointment most people think least about. You go, someone scrapes, you leave. But it is also the visit that does the most to keep you out of the chair for anything worse, and at a holistic practice it looks meaningfully different from the one you may be used to.
Rite Dentist is a mercury-safe, fluoride-free practice in Valley Village, a short drive from Sherman Oaks. Here is exactly what happens during a hygiene visit with us, and where it departs from the conventional version.
The structure is familiar. The substance is where the difference sits.
This is usually the first question Sherman Oaks patients ask, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a slogan. Fluoride has real evidence behind it for reducing decay. Our position is not that it is useless. It is that patients who would rather avoid systemic fluoride should not have to argue for that at every visit, and that hydroxyapatite is a well-studied alternative that remineralizes enamel without the same debate. So fluoride-free is our standard, not an upgrade you have to request. If you want fluoride, we will discuss it honestly.
Twice a year is the familiar advice and it suits most people. It is not a rule of nature though. Patients with a history of gum disease, smokers, people with diabetes, and anyone in orthodontic treatment often benefit from three or four visits a year. Someone with consistently healthy gums and good home care may genuinely be fine at the standard interval. The honest approach is to set the schedule from what your mouth is actually doing rather than from a default.
Almost everything expensive in dentistry starts as something small and painless. Gum inflammation that goes unaddressed becomes bone loss. A shadow on an X-ray becomes a root canal. The hygiene visit is where those get caught while they are still nothing, which makes it the least glamorous and most valuable appointment on the calendar. Our dentist in Sherman Oaks page covers the full range of care, and our family dentist in Sherman Oaks page explains how we handle cleanings for children, who get the same fluoride-free approach. For the philosophy behind all of it, see our guide to holistic dentistry.
A holistic cleaning includes a full soft-tissue and oral cancer screening, gentle scaling to remove plaque and tartar, polishing with hydroxyapatite rather than fluoride, and ozonated water to disinfect around the gums without antibiotics. It finishes with a plain explanation of what changed since your last visit.
For remineralizing enamel, hydroxyapatite is a well-studied alternative to fluoride and is the mineral enamel is largely made of. Fluoride does have evidence behind it for reducing decay. We make fluoride-free our standard so patients who prefer to avoid it do not have to ask, and we will discuss fluoride openly if you want it.
Twice a year suits most people, but it is not universal. A history of gum disease, smoking, diabetes, or orthodontic treatment often warrants three or four visits a year, while consistently healthy gums may do fine at the standard interval. The schedule should follow what your mouth is doing.
It should not. Some sensitivity is normal if your gums are already inflamed, which is a sign they need attention rather than a reason to avoid the visit. Tell the hygienist you are sensitive and the work can be done more slowly and gently.
