A biological dental exam is a comprehensive evaluation that looks at teeth, gums, bite, jaw function, airway, and the connection between oral conditions and systemic health. It takes longer than a conventional exam because it covers more ground. Patients leave with a clearer picture of what is happening in their mouth, why it matters, and what their realistic options are.

We use digital X-rays, which produce up to 90% less radiation than traditional film. A full-mouth series or panoramic image gives us a complete view of tooth roots, bone levels, jaw structure, and any areas of concern that are not visible clinically. We take only what is diagnostically necessary.
We measure gum pocket depths at six points around every tooth. Pocket depths above 3mm indicate inflammation and potential disease. We also note bleeding points, recession, and bone loss patterns. This data forms the baseline for tracking your gum health over time.
We identify every material currently in your mouth, including fillings, crowns, bridges, and implants. If you have amalgam fillings or metal crowns, we discuss what they contain, what options exist, and whether replacement makes clinical sense for your situation. We never pressure material replacement, but we do give you complete information.
We assess how your teeth come together, check for signs of grinding or clenching, and evaluate jaw joint mobility and any symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction. Many patients have had bite issues for years without realizing they are contributing to headaches, neck tension, or tooth wear.
Every new patient exam includes a visual and tactile screening of the soft tissues, tongue, floor of the mouth, and throat. Early detection of abnormal tissue changes dramatically improves outcomes.
