Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder affects an estimated 10 million Americans, making it one of the most common sources of facial pain. Symptoms range from jaw clicking and morning headaches to ear pain, neck stiffness, and accelerated tooth wear. A holistic approach to TMJ looks for the root causes, not just the symptoms, and avoids irreversible treatment wherever possible.

The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull on each side of your face. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, combining hinge and sliding motion, and it is in constant use during speaking, chewing, and swallowing. When this joint or the muscles surrounding it are under strain, the effects can ripple outward in ways patients do not always connect to their dentist.
Common TMJ symptoms include jaw clicking or popping, limited opening, pain when chewing, morning headaches (especially at the temples), ear pain without infection, neck and shoulder tightness, and visible wear on tooth surfaces. Bruxism (grinding or clenching) is both a cause and consequence of TMJ dysfunction and is often the primary driver.
A holistic TMJ evaluation looks at bite alignment, jaw position, sleep quality, stress patterns, and posture. Treatment at Rite Dentist begins with the most conservative options: a custom night guard to reduce grinding forces, bite adjustment if indicated, and patient education about daytime habits (clenching during concentration is extremely common and most patients are unaware of it).
We do not recommend aggressive interventions like joint surgery or irreversible occlusal grinding for the vast majority of TMJ cases. Research consistently shows that conservative, reversible treatments produce outcomes comparable to more invasive approaches for most patients. The goal is to reduce the strain on the joint and muscles and let the body’s natural healing process do the work.
