What Makes a Dental Material “Biocompatible”?
Biocompatibility in dentistry refers to how a material interacts with the body over time. A biocompatible material does not leach toxic substances, does not provoke chronic immune responses, and does not interfere with the normal function of surrounding tissues. No material is perfectly inert, but some carry significantly lower risk profiles than others.
The materials with the longest history of concern are dental amalgam (which contains approximately 50% mercury by weight), nickel-containing metal alloys (used in some crowns and orthodontic wires), and certain composite resins that contain BPA or BPA-releasing compounds. Each of these has peer-reviewed literature documenting biological effects, though individual sensitivity varies considerably.
For patients with autoimmune conditions, thyroid disorders, or multiple chemical sensitivities, material selection is especially significant. Some patients opt for biocompatibility testing, which uses blood serum analysis to identify which specific materials are least reactive for their individual immune system before a large restoration is placed.
Materials Rite Dentist Uses and Avoids
BPA-Free Composite Resin
Used for fillings and bonding. Tooth-colored and structurally strong. We use only BPA-free formulations, as some composite resins contain bisphenol compounds that can be released over time. Your restoration will match your tooth color and contain no heavy metals.
Ceramic and Porcelain Restorations
Used for crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers. All-ceramic restorations contain no metal alloys, making them ideal for patients with metal sensitivities. They are also visually indistinguishable from natural tooth structure.
Zirconia
Used for crowns and implant restorations. Zirconia is a ceramic material with exceptional strength and zero metal content. It is one of the most biocompatible options available for patients who need a durable, long-term crown or implant abutment.
What We Do Not Use
Rite Dentist does not place mercury amalgam, nickel-containing alloys, or BPA-containing composites. We do not use materials containing beryllium, a known carcinogen still found in some metal dental alloys.
