What to expect at your visit

More Than a Routine Checkup

At Rite Dentist, a dental exam is a thorough, methodical evaluation — not a quick glance in your mouth before you’re sent on your way. We begin with digital X-rays that give us a detailed view of everything beneath the surface: the roots of your teeth, bone levels, emerging wisdom teeth, and areas of decay that can’t be seen by the naked eye. We use the lowest radiation digital sensors available and take only the images that are clinically necessary.

Your exam includes a comprehensive periodontal evaluation — we measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth to assess the health of your gums and identify early signs of gum disease before it progresses. We also perform a bite assessment and a TMJ check, noting any irregularities in how your teeth meet and whether your jaw joint shows signs of strain or dysfunction.

Oral cancer screening is a standard part of every exam at our office. We visually and physically examine the soft tissues of your mouth — lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and throat — looking for any changes, lesions, or areas of concern. Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes, and this screening takes only a few minutes.

What sets our approach apart is how we interpret what we find. We look for systemic connections — links between your oral health and your broader wellbeing, including inflammation, nutritional factors, and breathing or sleep patterns. We explain everything we discover in plain language and only recommend treatment when it is genuinely indicated. You will never leave our office feeling pressured or confused about your oral health.

Common Questions

What patients ask about dental exams

How long does a dental exam take?

A comprehensive exam for a new patient typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, including X-rays, a full clinical evaluation, and time to discuss our findings and answer your questions. Recall exams for established patients are generally 45 to 60 minutes. We don't rush, so the time you're given is the time we actually spend with you.

What happens during the X-rays?

We use digital X-ray sensors that emit up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. Small sensors are placed inside your mouth to capture images of individual teeth and bite-wing views that show the spaces between teeth. A panoramic X-ray may be taken periodically to evaluate the full jaw, sinuses, and supporting bone. We take only the images clinically necessary for your care.

Is an oral cancer screening part of my exam?

Yes, every time. We conduct a visual and tactile screening of all the soft tissues in and around your mouth — including your tongue, cheeks, lips, gums, and throat — as part of every routine exam. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, and routine screening is one of the most important things we do for your long-term health.

How often do I need a dental exam?

Twice a year is the standard recommendation for most patients. If you have active gum disease, a history of cavities, diabetes, or other factors that increase your risk, we may recommend more frequent visits — typically every three to four months. We'll work with you to find the right interval based on your individual health picture.

Do you explain what you find during the exam?

Always. We walk you through your X-rays, point out anything we observe, and explain what it means in plain language. If we recommend a treatment, we tell you why, what your options are, and what happens if you wait. We believe an informed patient makes better decisions and has a more positive relationship with their dental care.
