How sealants work

A Simple Barrier Against Cavities

The chewing surfaces of your back teeth — your molars and premolars — are full of deep grooves and fissures that are incredibly effective at grinding food. They’re also incredibly effective at trapping food particles and bacteria. These grooves can be so narrow that even a single toothbrush bristle can’t reach the bottom. No matter how diligently your child brushes, those hidden surfaces remain at risk for decay.

Dental sealants solve this problem with remarkable simplicity. A thin plastic coating is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where it flows into the grooves and bonds directly to the enamel. Once cured with a special light, it creates a smooth, sealed surface that food and bacteria simply cannot penetrate. The result is a protective barrier that dramatically reduces the risk of cavities in these vulnerable areas.

The procedure is completely painless and takes only minutes per tooth — no drilling, no anesthesia, no discomfort. We clean and dry the tooth, apply a gentle conditioner to prepare the surface, paint on the sealant material, and cure it. Your child won’t feel a thing, and they’ll leave the appointment with meaningful protection in place. Sealants typically last several years before they need to be reapplied, and we check their condition at every recall visit.

We recommend sealants most often for children between the ages of 6 and 14, when the permanent molars first erupt and cavity risk is highest. However, adults with deep grooves and no existing decay or fillings in those teeth can also benefit significantly. We use only BPA-free sealant materials — consistent with our commitment to biocompatible, whole-body care.

Common Questions

What patients ask about dental sealants

At what age should my child get sealants?

We typically recommend sealants as soon as the first permanent molars erupt, which is usually around age 6, and again when the second set of permanent molars comes in around age 12. This window is when cavity risk is highest for back teeth. The sooner they're protected, the better — ideally before any decay has a chance to begin.

Do sealants replace brushing and flossing?

No — sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, but they don't cover the sides of teeth or the spaces between them. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are still essential for complete protection. Think of sealants as an extra layer of defense for the surfaces that are hardest to clean, not a replacement for good home hygiene.

How long do dental sealants last?

With normal use, sealants typically last five to ten years. We inspect them at every recall visit and will reapply them if they show significant wear or chipping. Even if a sealant loses some material over time, it may still be providing partial protection — which is why regular monitoring matters.

Are sealants BPA-free?

Yes. We use BPA-free sealant materials at Rite Dentist. This is consistent with our holistic, biocompatible approach to all materials used in our office. Some older sealant formulations contained trace amounts of BPA, but modern BPA-free options provide the same protection without the concern. We're happy to discuss specific product details if you'd like more information.

Are sealants covered by insurance?

Most PPO dental insurance plans cover sealants for children, typically up to age 14 or 16, as a preventive benefit. Coverage for adults varies by plan. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment and let you know what's covered. Even without insurance, sealants are an affordable investment compared to the cost of treating a cavity.
