THE BASICS

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that literally bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the adjacent natural teeth or implants on either side.

Unlike removable partial dentures, a bridge is permanently cemented and functions like your natural teeth — you eat, speak, and brush normally. It prevents neighboring teeth from drifting into the empty space, which can cause bite misalignment and jaw joint strain over time.

We offer traditional bridges (supported by natural teeth), implant-supported bridges (no need to crown healthy adjacent teeth), and Maryland bridges (a conservative, minimally invasive option for front teeth).

CANDIDACY

Is a Bridge Right for You?

Bridges work best when the teeth on either side of the gap are already crowned or have significant existing restorations. If the neighboring teeth are healthy and untouched, an implant-supported solution avoids reducing those teeth to place crowns.

You are likely a good bridge candidate if you have one or two adjacent missing teeth, healthy supporting teeth or implants on either side, good gum health, and a stable bite. We will review all options together — including implants — so you can make an informed decision.

Most bridges are completed in two appointments: preparation and temporaries at the first visit, cementation of the final restoration at the second.

PROCESS

The Bridge Process

Visit 1 — Preparation. The abutment teeth on either side of the gap are shaped to receive crowns. Precise digital or physical impressions are taken and sent to the lab. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth in the meantime.

Lab fabrication. Your permanent bridge is crafted in porcelain or zirconia — matched to your surrounding teeth. This typically takes 2–3 weeks.

Visit 2 — Cementation. The temporary is removed, the permanent bridge is fitted and adjusted for bite, then permanently cemented. You leave with a fully restored smile the same day.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your bridge questions, answered.
How long does a dental bridge last?
With good oral hygiene and regular cleanings, most bridges last 10–15 years. The longevity depends on the health of the supporting teeth, your bite habits, and how well you clean under the pontic (the artificial tooth).
Does getting a bridge hurt?
The preparation appointment is done under local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Some sensitivity on the prepared teeth is normal for a few days, managed easily with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How do I clean under a dental bridge?
A regular toothbrush cannot reach under the pontic. We’ll show you how to use a floss threader or interdental brush to clean beneath the bridge daily — this is the most important step in keeping the supporting teeth healthy long-term.
Will my bridge look natural?
Yes. We use high-quality porcelain and zirconia that mimic the translucency and shade of natural enamel. At the placement appointment we confirm the shade and shape before final cementation.
Can I eat normally with a bridge?
Yes, after a short adjustment period. We recommend avoiding extremely hard or sticky foods — like ice or caramel — that could loosen or crack any dental restoration.
