SMART Certified Dentist in Valley Village, CA

Most dentists don’t follow a mercury-safe protocol. Rite Dentist does — and is certified to do so. Call 818-766-7776 to schedule your SMART removal.

SMART certification is the IAOMT’s gold standard for safe mercury amalgam filling removal. The protocol exists because mercury vapor released during conventional removal poses a real, measurable risk to patients, dental staff, and the environment. Our credential confirms we follow it on every removal — without shortcuts.

What is SMART?

SMART stands for the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique — a comprehensive set of safety measures designed to reduce mercury exposure during dental amalgam filling removal. The protocol was developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) based on decades of scientific research into mercury vapor toxicity and clinical containment methods.

Why does SMART matter?

All dental amalgams — commonly called silver fillings — contain approximately 50% mercury, a known neurotoxin. Mercury is constantly released from these fillings in the form of an invisible vapor, even at rest.

The act of drilling out an old amalgam dramatically increases the release: high quantities of mercury vapor and fine particulates become airborne and can be inhaled and absorbed through the lungs. Without proper containment, this poses a measurable health risk to patients, dentists, dental personnel, and the developing fetuses of pregnant patients and staff.

Which dentists are SMART certified?

Dentists who have obtained SMART certification from the IAOMT have completed structured coursework on mercury toxicity, vapor containment, and the safe removal of amalgam fillings. The educational programming includes hands-on training in the use of specific safety equipment — rubber dams, high-volume suction with mercury-rated traps, alternative-air supply systems, and isolation drapes. To maintain certification, your dentist must enroll in the program annually for safety-measure review and re-credentialing.

“Rite Dentist is here to make you feel good, look good, and be healthier.”

Common questions

What patients ask about SMART certification.
How is SMART different from how most dentists remove amalgams?
Most practices remove amalgams with a standard suction tip and call it a day. SMART layers six containment systems — rubber dam isolation, mercury-rated suction, alternative clean air, isolation drape, hospital-grade air filtration, and immediate biocompatible replacement.
How do I verify a dentist is SMART certified?
Ask to see their current IAOMT SMART certificate, or check the IAOMT directory directly. The credential is renewed annually — lapsed certifications shouldn’t be advertised.
Is SMART removal more expensive?
There’s a per-appointment overhead for the protocol itself (equipment, alternative air, full setup time). Most PPO plans cover the filling replacement portion. We explain pricing transparently up front before any work begins.
Will I notice a difference in how I feel after?
Some patients report subtle improvements over the following weeks — better sleep, fewer headaches, clearer thinking. Others feel no difference, and that’s also normal. We don’t make medical claims about removal outcomes.
Do you remove all my amalgams in one visit?
Almost never. We sequence multiple removals across visits to give your body time to clear what’s already mobilized. Treatment plans are based on biological tolerance, not dental efficiency.
