Biocompatible Dental Materials in Valley Village, CA

Non-toxic restorations, implants, and hygiene products near you. Call 818-766-7776 to book an appointment today.

Biocompatible dental materials are non-toxic alternatives to the mercury, BPA, and metal alloys used in conventional dentistry. A biocompatible material is one that performs its clinical function — sealing, restoring, or replacing a tooth — without releasing harmful substances into your body or triggering an immune response.

At Rite Dentist, biocompatible materials are not an upgrade or an add-on. They are the only materials we use. Every filling, crown, bridge, implant, and hygiene product we offer has been selected based on published biocompatibility research and IAOMT guidelines.

Why Traditional Dental Materials Are a Problem

Most conventional dental materials were developed decades ago, before the current body of research on toxicity and biocompatibility existed. Three substances in particular have been identified by researchers and regulatory bodies as problematic:

Mercury (dental amalgam)

According to the IAOMT, dental amalgam fillings contain approximately 50% mercury by weight. Research has documented mercury vapor release during chewing, brushing, and grinding. The FDA updated its guidance in 2020 to recommend that certain high-risk groups avoid amalgam entirely, including pregnant women, children under six, and individuals with kidney impairment.

BPA (bisphenol A)

Some composite resins and dental sealants contain BPA or BPA-releasing compounds. BPA is a known endocrine disruptor. We use only BPA-free composite resins and sealants confirmed free of bisphenol compounds.

Fluoride

Fluoride is classified as a neurotoxin at high doses. While debate continues over therapeutic levels, Rite Dentist is entirely fluoride-free by choice. We use hydroxyapatite — a calcium compound naturally found in tooth enamel — for remineralization instead.

What we use

Our Biocompatible Materials.

01

Composite Resin

BPA-free tooth-colored fillings. Match your natural enamel and bond directly to tooth structure — no mercury, no metal.

02

Zirconia

Used for crowns, bridges, and implants. Strong, white, and fully metal-free — the most biocompatible restorative material available.

03

Porcelain & Ceramic

Used for veneers, inlays, and onlays. Clinically proven, aesthetically excellent, and completely free of metal compounds.

04

Hydroxyapatite

Our fluoride-free remineralization standard. A calcium compound naturally found in tooth enamel — rebuilds teeth without neurotoxic additives.

How We Apply Biocompatible Materials Across Every Service

Biocompatible materials are not a specialty service at Rite Dentist — they are the default. Whether you come in for a routine cleaning or full-arch restoration, the same non-toxic standard applies across every treatment.

For patients with existing amalgam fillings, we remove them safely using the IAOMT SMART protocol — a six-step containment system that minimizes mercury vapor exposure during removal. The filling is then replaced immediately with a composite or ceramic restoration. No temporary materials, no delays.

Our Biocompatible Standard, Service by Service

Every service at Rite Dentist uses the safest available material for that application:

  • Fillings: BPA-free composite resin — no amalgam placed
  • Crowns: Zirconia or all-porcelain — no porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Implants: Zirconia ceramic — no titanium metal posts
  • Sealants: BPA-free — no bisphenol-releasing compounds
  • Veneers: All-porcelain — no metal backing
  • Hygiene: Fluoride-free prophy paste and hydroxyapatite remineralization
  • Orthodontics: Clear aligner trays (Invisalign) — no metal brackets or wires

Who Benefits Most from Biocompatible Dentistry?

Biocompatible materials benefit every patient, but they are especially important for those with known sensitivities, chronic illness, or specific health goals. Patients who commonly seek biocompatible dental care include those with autoimmune conditions, thyroid disorders, metal allergies, chronic fatigue, and those who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Patients referred by integrative physicians, naturopaths, or functional medicine practitioners often come specifically seeking mercury amalgam removal, metal-free restorations, or fluoride-free care. We work collaboratively with your broader healthcare team to coordinate treatment timing and detox support.

“What goes in your mouth becomes part of your body. We take that seriously.”

Common questions

What patients ask about biocompatible materials.
What are biocompatible dental materials?
Biocompatible dental materials are non-toxic alternatives to conventional materials like mercury amalgam, BPA-containing composites, and metal alloys. They perform the same clinical functions — filling, restoring, and replacing teeth — without releasing harmful substances into the body. At Rite Dentist, that means composite resin (BPA-free), zirconia, porcelain, and hydroxyapatite across every service we offer.
Are composite fillings as durable as amalgam?
Yes. Modern BPA-free composite resins match amalgam for durability in most applications, and bond directly to tooth structure — which means less tooth removal during preparation. They also flex slightly with the tooth, which reduces the risk of fracture over time. The main difference is aesthetics: composite matches your tooth color, amalgam does not.
Is zirconia safe for dental implants?
Yes. Zirconia is an FDA-cleared implant material with documented biocompatibility. It does not corrode or release ions into surrounding tissue the way metal implants can. For patients with metal sensitivities or autoimmune conditions, zirconia is the preferred choice. Success rates are comparable to titanium in peer-reviewed studies.
Does insurance cover biocompatible materials?
Most PPO insurance plans cover the procedure regardless of material — the coverage is for a filling, not for amalgam specifically. In some cases there is a small additional cost for composite versus amalgam, which we explain upfront. We provide full cost transparency before any treatment begins.
What if I already have amalgam fillings?
We can remove them safely using the IAOMT SMART protocol — a six-step containment system that minimizes mercury vapor exposure during the procedure. We typically sequence removal across multiple visits to allow your body time to clear mercury between sessions. Existing fillings are replaced immediately with composite or ceramic restorations.
