THE BASICS

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed directly into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. Over 3–6 months it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration — creating a permanent, stable anchor for a custom crown.

Unlike dentures or bridges, implants do not rely on adjacent teeth for support. They stand completely on their own and stimulate the jawbone just like a natural tooth root, preventing the bone loss that follows extraction.

At Rite Dentist, we handle the full process in-house: implant placement, the healing period, and the final crown. You never need to coordinate between multiple offices.

CANDIDACY

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Most adults who are missing one or more teeth are candidates for dental implants. The key requirements are adequate jawbone volume to support the titanium post, healthy gums free from active periodontal disease, and overall good health.

If bone volume has diminished after a long-term extraction, a bone graft can rebuild the site before implant placement — we perform this in-office as well. Patients with controlled diabetes, well-managed medical conditions, or who smoke can often still receive implants; we evaluate each case individually.

The best way to determine candidacy is a consultation and a cone-beam CT scan, which gives us a precise 3-D map of your bone density and anatomy before we plan the case.

PROCESS

The Implant Process, Step by Step

1. Consultation & imaging. We review your health history, take digital X-rays or a CBCT scan, and create a placement plan tailored to your anatomy.

2. Implant placement. The titanium post is placed under local anesthesia. Most patients describe the procedure as less uncomfortable than an extraction. A temporary restoration may be placed the same day.

3. Osseointegration. Over 3–6 months the bone fuses around the implant. You wear a provisional and return for periodic check-ins.

4. Abutment & crown. Once integrated, we attach the abutment and take precise impressions for your final porcelain crown — matched in color, shape, and bite to your natural teeth.

The entire process from placement to final crown typically takes 4–8 months depending on healing speed and whether a bone graft is needed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything you’ve wondered about implants.
Do dental implants hurt?
The procedure is done under local anesthesia and most patients report it is more comfortable than they expected — comparable to an extraction. Mild soreness for 2–3 days afterward is normal and managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long do implants last?
With proper care — brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings — implants routinely last 20–30+ years. The crown on top may need replacement after 15–20 years due to normal wear, but the titanium post itself can last a lifetime.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
Coverage varies by plan. Many plans cover the crown portion but not the implant post itself. We verify your benefits before treatment and offer flexible financing including RitePlan, our in-house membership program.
Can I get an implant the same day?
In select cases — primarily when extracting a tooth — immediate implant placement is possible. We assess bone volume and infection status at the extraction appointment to determine eligibility.
What if I do not have enough bone?
Bone grafting can rebuild volume in most cases. We perform grafting in-office; after 3–4 months of healing the site is typically ready for implant placement.
