THE BASICS

Why Keeping Your Natural Tooth Matters

No restoration — implant, bridge, or denture — replicates the feel and function of your natural tooth. Your teeth have a complex root system embedded in living bone with nerves and blood supply that coordinate your bite, stimulate bone growth, and respond to pressure in a way no prosthetic can fully replicate.

At Rite Dentist, tooth preservation is our default position. We only recommend extraction when a tooth is genuinely unrestorable. Before that point, we have a full toolkit of treatments designed to save teeth that other dentists might give up on.

KNOCKED OUT

Teeth That Seem Hopeless Often Aren’t

A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth is a true time-critical emergency. The window for successful re-implantation is narrow — ideally under 30 minutes. Pick up the tooth by the crown, rinse without scrubbing, and either slip it back into the socket or keep it moist in cold milk or your saliva. Then call us and come immediately.

Severe decay, deep cracks, and infected pulp all sound like death sentences for a tooth — but modern dentistry has solutions for each. Root canal therapy eliminates infection while preserving the root. Crowns rebuild shattered teeth. Even teeth with advanced bone loss can sometimes be stabilized. Let us evaluate before you accept extraction as the only option.

TOOTH-SAVING TREATMENTS WE OFFER.

Tooth-saving treatments we offer.

Depending on the condition of your tooth, one or more of these approaches may allow us to save it.

ENDODONTICS

Root Canal Therapy

Removes infected pulp tissue, cleans and seals the root canals, and allows the tooth to remain functional — often for life with a crown.

TRAUMA

Tooth Re-implantation & Splinting

For knocked-out teeth, we re-seat the tooth in its socket and splint it to neighboring teeth while it heals over 2–4 weeks.

PERIODONTAL

Crown Lengthening

When decay or fracture extends below the gumline, we surgically expose more of the tooth structure so a crown can be placed.

RESTORATION

Dental Crown

After root canal or severe structural damage, a crown encases the entire visible tooth, restoring strength and function.

GUM CARE

Scaling & Root Planing

For teeth threatened by gum disease, deep cleaning removes infection-causing bacteria from below the gumline to halt bone loss.

CONSERVATIVE

Pulp Capping

For teeth with early pulp involvement, a medicated cap may allow the pulp to heal — avoiding root canal entirely in select cases.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything you’ve wondered about saving teeth.

Answers to common questions from Valley Village patients.

Is root canal therapy painful?
Root canal therapy has an undeserved reputation. With modern anesthesia and techniques, it’s no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. Most patients report that the tooth pain before the procedure was far worse than the treatment itself.
How do I know if my tooth can be saved?
An exam and X-rays are required to assess the extent of damage. Factors include the degree of structural loss, whether the root is fractured, bone levels around the tooth, and the health of surrounding tissue. We’ll give you an honest assessment.
What happens if I wait too long?
Delay often converts a saveable situation into an extraction. Infection spreads to the bone, cracks propagate, and structural loss becomes irreversible. If you have any doubt, call us — a same-day evaluation takes the guesswork out.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals are completed in one appointment of 60–90 minutes. More complex cases with multiple canals or significant infection may require a second visit. We’ll follow up with a crown in a separate appointment.
Can a badly broken tooth be saved?
Sometimes. It depends on where the break is. Fractures at or above the gumline can often be restored with a crown. Fractures that extend below the bone level are much harder to treat and may require extraction. We’ll evaluate the specific geometry of the fracture to advise you.
What's the success rate of root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy has a success rate of 85–95% at 8–10 years when performed properly and followed up with a crown. Teeth treated with root canal can last a lifetime.
