Fillings That Put Your Health First
For decades, the standard filling material was silver amalgam — a mixture of metals that includes approximately 50% mercury by weight. While still used in many offices, amalgam raises legitimate biocompatibility concerns that we take seriously. At Rite Dentist, we made the decision long ago to use only tooth-colored composite resin for all restorations. It’s better for your health, better for the environment, and — frankly — better for how your smile looks.
Composite resin is a durable, glass-and-plastic mixture that bonds directly to your natural tooth structure. Unlike amalgam, which requires the dentist to remove additional healthy tooth material to create mechanical retention, composite bonds to the tooth chemically — which means we preserve more of what’s naturally yours. We shade-match the composite to the exact color of your tooth so the finished restoration is virtually invisible, even in back teeth.
Tooth-colored fillings aren’t just for cavities. We also use composite resin to repair chips, minor cracks, worn edges, and small fractures — often in a single visit, without the need for a crown. The versatility of the material allows us to restore teeth conservatively and beautifully at the same time.
For patients who have old amalgam fillings and wish to have them replaced, we follow the SMART protocol (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique). This specialized procedure minimizes mercury vapor exposure during removal using sectioning techniques, rubber dams, high-volume evacuation, and other protective measures. If this is something you’re considering, we’re happy to discuss the process in detail at your next visit.
Common Questions
What patients ask about tooth-colored fillings
What is a tooth-colored filling made of?
Tooth-colored fillings are made from composite resin — a mixture of a plastic resin base and fine glass or silica particles. The material is applied to the tooth in layers, each cured with a blue LED light, and then shaped and polished to match the natural contours of your tooth. The result is a strong, seamless restoration that looks and feels like part of your original tooth.
Are composite fillings as strong as metal fillings?
Modern composite resins have improved dramatically and are strong enough for use in both front and back teeth, including molars that bear significant chewing forces. While amalgam has a slightly higher compressive strength, composite bonds to the tooth structure and distributes stress more naturally. For most patients, composite is an excellent choice for any filling.
Can you replace my old silver amalgam fillings?
Yes. We perform amalgam removal using the SMART protocol — Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique — which is specifically designed to minimize your exposure to mercury vapor during the removal process. This involves sectioning the filling into chunks, using a rubber dam, high-volume evacuation, and air filtration. Once removed, we restore the tooth with biocompatible composite resin.
How long do tooth-colored fillings last?
With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, composite fillings typically last seven to ten years or longer. Longevity depends on the size of the restoration, its location in the mouth, your bite forces, and how well you care for your teeth at home. We'll monitor your fillings at each recall visit and let you know when replacement is necessary.
Does getting a filling hurt?
We use local anesthesia to numb the area before we begin, so you should feel no pain during the procedure — just some pressure and vibration from the instruments. After the anesthetic wears off, it's normal to have mild sensitivity for a few days. If the sensitivity persists or your bite feels off, call us and we'll adjust the filling at no charge.
