THE BASICS
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the chewing surface down to the gumline. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, and strength while encasing it in a protective shell that withstands normal biting and chewing forces.
Crowns are used when a tooth is too damaged or decayed for a filling to hold, after a root canal (to protect the hollowed tooth), to anchor a dental bridge, or to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth as part of a smile makeover.
We use all-ceramic and zirconia materials that match your surrounding teeth perfectly — no dark metal margins at the gumline, no grey tones showing through.
WHEN YOU NEED ONE
When Do You Need a Crown?
Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth has a crack or fracture that extends toward the root, a cavity too large for a filling to reliably restore, a completed root canal, or significant structural loss from old metal fillings that are fracturing the tooth.
They are also used cosmetically — to reshape a tooth that is too short, too wide, or severely stained when other whitening or bonding options would not achieve the desired result. In these cases the crown does double duty: protecting the tooth structurally while dramatically improving its appearance.
If a tooth is cracked and you are experiencing sensitivity to cold, hot, or biting pressure — do not wait. A crack that reaches the nerve requires a root canal before the crown can be placed; the sooner we see it, the better the prognosis.
PROCESS
The Crown Process at Rite Dentist
Visit 1 — Preparation. The tooth is shaped to receive the crown, removing a thin layer of enamel on all sides. Digital impressions or a physical mold captures the prep and surrounding bite. A temporary acrylic crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made.
Lab fabrication. Your crown is milled or hand-layered in ceramic or zirconia, then glazed and stained to match your natural tooth shade. Most labs return the crown in 2–3 weeks.
Visit 2 — Cementation. The temporary is removed, the permanent crown is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, then permanently cemented. You walk out with a fully restored tooth the same day.

MISSING TOOTH
Dental Implants
When a tooth cannot be saved, an implant with a crown is the strongest, most natural-looking replacement option.
SPAN THE GAP
Dental Bridges
Bridges use adjacent crowns as anchors to replace one or more missing teeth in a fixed, non-removable restoration.
COSMETIC FINISH
Porcelain Veneers
For front teeth that are structurally sound, thin veneers offer a less invasive alternative to a full crown.
