BIOLOGICAL DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN · LOS ANGELES
Because the foundations of lifelong oral health are built in childhood.
Children are not small adults. Their developing bodies process toxins differently, their immune systems are still maturing, and what enters their mouths during childhood can shape their health for decades. At Rite Dentist in Los Angeles, we provide holistic dental care for children that skips mercury amalgam, minimizes fluoride exposure, and uses biocompatible materials at every step.

Why Children’s Dental Care Requires a Different Approach

A child’s nervous system, kidneys, and liver are still developing during the first decade of life. This means toxic exposures that an adult might metabolize relatively quickly can accumulate more readily in a child’s tissues and affect neurological development.

Conventional pediatric dentistry has historically used two substances that biological dentists avoid entirely: mercury amalgam fillings and systemic fluoride treatments. Neither is appropriate for children, in our view, and neither is necessary given the alternatives available today.

At Rite Dentist, we treat children using the same biocompatible standards we apply to adults: no mercury, no unnecessary chemical exposures, and materials that support rather than disrupt the body’s natural processes.

Mercury Amalgam and Children
Standard silver-colored fillings contain approximately 50% mercury by weight. The WHO classifies mercury as one of the top 10 chemicals of major public health concern. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended limiting amalgam use in children, pregnant women, and people with kidney impairment. We have never placed amalgam fillings and never will.
Fluoride and Children
Systemic fluoride, whether ingested as supplements or absorbed through fluoride varnishes applied repeatedly, carries risk of dental fluorosis in developing teeth and has been associated in some research with effects on thyroid function. We discuss fluoride honestly with parents and offer alternatives that support enamel strength without chemical risk.

What a Children’s Holistic Dental Visit Looks Like

We designed our children’s visits to be calm, unhurried, and free from the sensory overload that makes kids anxious about dentistry. Here is what a typical first visit covers:

A full-mouth assessment using safe imaging. We use digital X-rays when clinically necessary, which reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional film X-rays. We limit X-rays based on actual clinical need rather than a fixed interval schedule.

Diet and nutrition conversation. The foods children eat directly shape the pH environment in their mouths and the mineral density of developing enamel. We talk with parents about practical, specific dietary patterns that protect teeth rather than reciting generic advice to reduce sugar.

Early bite and jaw development screening. Airway-focused dentistry starts young. We look at how the palate is developing, whether there are signs of mouth breathing, and whether early intervention could prevent orthodontic or sleep issues later.

Biocompatible cavity repair if needed. If a child has a cavity, we repair it with composite resin or glass ionomer materials tested for biocompatibility. No amalgam. No mercury. The filling matches the tooth and does not release vapor during normal chewing.

50%
Mercury by weight in conventional silver amalgam fillings — a substance the WHO lists as one of the top 10 public health chemical concerns
90%
Less radiation with digital X-rays versus traditional film — and we only take them when clinically necessary
100%
Mercury-free — Rite Dentist has never placed an amalgam filling and uses only biocompatible materials

Frequently Asked Questions: Children’s Holistic Dentistry in Los Angeles

At what age should I bring my child to a holistic dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends a first visit within six months of the first tooth appearing, or by age one. We follow the same timeline. Early visits are brief, gentle, and focused on establishing trust rather than performing treatment. They also give us a chance to catch bite or jaw development patterns that are much easier to address at age two than at age twelve.
Does Rite Dentist use fluoride on children?
We do not apply fluoride varnish as a standard protocol. We discuss the published evidence on fluoride with parents and offer alternatives including xylitol applications, remineralizing pastes with calcium phosphate, and dietary guidance. Some parents want no fluoride at all, and others prefer a limited targeted application. We follow your lead and share our reasoning transparently either way.
What does a holistic dentist use instead of amalgam for children?
For primary (baby) teeth, we use glass ionomer cement, which releases fluoride naturally from the material itself at low levels and bonds well without needing adhesive chemicals. For permanent teeth, we use composite resin. Both materials are tooth-colored, durable, and free of mercury. We do not place silver amalgam under any circumstances.
Is digital X-ray radiation safe for children?
Digital dental X-rays expose children to roughly the same radiation as a short plane flight or a day of background environmental radiation. We still apply lead aprons and take X-rays only when the clinical benefit is clear. We do not follow rigid interval protocols that produce X-rays regardless of whether the child has any risk factors for cavities. Every X-ray decision is individualized.
Can a holistic dentist help with my child's mouth breathing or bite problems?
Yes. Airway dentistry is part of our holistic approach. Mouth breathing in children can contribute to narrow palates, crooked teeth, poor sleep, and behavioral issues. We assess palate width, tongue posture, and lip seal at every visit. When we see early signs of restricted airway development, we discuss options with parents that may include myofunctional therapy referrals or palate expanders, depending on the child’s age and anatomy.
Do you see children for their first dental visit?
Absolutely. First visits at our office are designed to be positive experiences. We take time for the child to explore the chair, meet the instruments, and feel comfortable before any clinical work begins. Our goal is that your child leaves looking forward to coming back.
