TMJ Treatment in Valley Village, CA

Jaw pain shouldn’t be your normal. Dr. Babrood, DDS, FICD treats TMJ disorders at their source — not just the symptoms. Call 818-766-7776 to schedule your evaluation.

Temporomandibular joint disorder — TMJ or TMD — affects millions of Americans, yet it remains chronically undertreated. The temporomandibular joint is the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. When it misfires — from stress, bite misalignment, teeth grinding, or trauma — the result is pain that can radiate through your jaw, head, neck, and ears.

At Rite Dentist, we take a whole-body approach to TMJ treatment. That means identifying what’s driving the dysfunction — not just prescribing a mouthguard and moving on. Dr. Babrood, a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry and IAOMT-certified dentist, trained at USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry and evaluates every TMJ case with the systemic context it deserves.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder (TMD) is a group of conditions affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. It’s one of the most common sources of facial pain — second only to toothache. Studies estimate that 5 to 12 percent of the U.S. population experiences TMD symptoms at any given time (NIH, 2023).

Common TMJ symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing
  • Headaches concentrated at the temples
  • Ear pain or fullness without infection
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Difficulty fully opening your mouth
  • Teeth that feel worn, sensitive, or uneven

TMJ disorders have multiple causes. Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) is the most common trigger — often driven by stress or undiagnosed sleep apnea. Bite misalignment, jaw injury, arthritis, and connective tissue disorders can also cause or worsen TMD.

How Dr. Babrood Treats TMJ Disorders

Treatment starts with a comprehensive evaluation: reviewing your bite, assessing joint movement, examining for signs of grinding, and understanding your stress patterns and sleep quality. From there, we build a treatment plan matched to the root cause.

OUR APPROACH

Three paths to TMJ relief.

01

Custom oral appliances

Precision-fitted night guards and splints that reposition the jaw, reduce clenching force, and allow muscles to recover.

02

Bite correction

When misalignment is the cause, targeted adjustments or orthodontic intervention addresses the root — not just the pain.

03

Whole-body context

Sleep quality, stress, posture, and nutrition all affect TMJ. We treat the person, not just the joint.

Why Choose Rite Dentist for TMJ Treatment?

Most dental offices hand you a stock mouthguard. At Rite Dentist, we start by asking why you’re grinding. Is it stress? Poor sleep? Airway obstruction? Bite problems? The answer changes the treatment entirely.

Dr. Babrood is a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry (FICD) — an invitation-only honor society recognizing the world’s leading dentists — and a board member of the San Fernando Valley Dental Society. Her training at USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry and IAOMT certification inform a treatment philosophy that considers your whole body, not just your jaw.

“A mouthguard manages the symptom. Understanding why you’re clenching is how we solve the problem.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder (TMD) is a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint — the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. Symptoms include jaw pain, clicking or popping, headaches, ear pain, and difficulty opening your mouth. It’s estimated to affect 5 to 12 percent of the U.S. population (NIH, 2023).

Can TMJ be treated without surgery?

Yes — the vast majority of TMJ cases resolve without surgery. First-line treatments include custom oral appliances (night guards or splints), bite adjustments, stress management, and physical therapy. Surgery is rarely necessary and considered only after conservative treatments have been fully explored.

What's causing my jaw to click?

Jaw clicking is usually caused by displacement of the articular disc inside the TMJ. Common triggers include teeth grinding (bruxism), bite misalignment, jaw trauma, or arthritis. Clicking alone, without pain, may not require treatment — but clicking with pain or restricted movement should be evaluated.

Is TMJ related to teeth grinding?

Yes — bruxism (grinding and clenching) is one of the most common causes of TMJ disorder. The repeated force damages the joint, strains the muscles, and wears tooth enamel. Bruxism is often connected to stress or undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, which is why we evaluate sleep quality as part of every TMJ workup.

How long does TMJ treatment take?

Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 2 to 4 weeks of starting oral appliance therapy. Full resolution — especially when bite correction is needed — may take several months. Ongoing management (such as wearing a night guard) is common for patients with chronic bruxism.
