Zirconia: A Better Crown

Made from a single block of biocompatible ceramic, Zirconia is stronger than PFM, contains no metal alloys, and integrates beautifully with surrounding teeth. No dark lines. Completely Metal-Free

Standard metal crowns contain a mixture of nickel, chromium, beryllium, and other alloys that have no place in a health-focused dental practice. Every crown we place is biocompatible, BPA-free, and safe for patients with sensitivities or those who prefer a holistic approach to their health.

When Does a Tooth Need a Crown?

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth, protecting it and restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are recommended in a number of situations:

  • Broken or cracked tooth – A crack that extends below the gumline or a significant fracture cannot be repaired with a simple filling. A crown holds the tooth together and prevents the crack from spreading.
  • Large cavity – When decay has destroyed too much of the tooth structure for a filling to reliably restore it, a crown provides full coverage and lasting protection.
  • Tooth after a root canal – Root canal treatment removes the inner pulp of the tooth, leaving it more brittle. A crown is placed over the treated tooth to protect it from fracturing under chewing forces.
  • Dental implant restoration – Once an implant post has integrated with the jawbone, a custom crown is attached to complete the restoration and replace the visible portion of the missing tooth.
  • Severely worn teeth – Teeth ground down by bruxism or acid erosion lose their shape and function. Crowns rebuild the proper height and protect remaining enamel.
  • Cosmetic correction – Severely discolored, misshapen, or structurally compromised teeth that cannot be improved with veneers or bonding may benefit from full crown coverage for a lasting aesthetic result.

How the Crown Process Works

Step 1
Evaluation and Preparation

We examine the tooth, take digital X-rays, and confirm a crown is the right solution. The tooth is then gently shaped to create an ideal fit for the new crown. Local anesthetic keeps you comfortable throughout.

Step 2
Digital Impressions

No goopy impression trays. We use digital scanning to capture a precise 3D image of your tooth and bite. This results in a more accurate crown with a better fit – and a much more comfortable experience for you.

Step 3
Crown Fabrication

For same-day crowns, the Zirconia is designed and milled in-office while you wait. For cases requiring a lab-fabricated crown, a high-quality temporary is placed and your permanent crown is ready in approximately two weeks.

Step 4
Fitting and Bonding

We seat the crown, verify your bite, and make any minor adjustments for a perfect fit. Once confirmed, the crown is bonded permanently in place. You leave with a fully restored, natural-looking tooth.

Types of Crowns We Offer

Every patient and every tooth is different. We offer a range of biocompatible crown options to match the clinical needs and aesthetic goals of your specific case.

Zirconia Crowns (Our Preferred Option)

Zirconia is our go-to crown material for most patients. It is exceptionally strong, completely metal-free, and biocompatible. The translucency and shade-matching of modern Zirconia blends naturally with surrounding teeth. Available as a same-day crown for qualifying cases.

All-Ceramic Crowns

Ideal for front teeth where maximum aesthetics are the priority. All-ceramic crowns offer the most lifelike appearance available, with translucency that closely mimics natural tooth enamel. Best suited for anterior restorations with lower bite forces.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

Using in-office CAD/CAM technology, we design and mill your crown during your appointment. CEREC same-day crowns eliminate the need for a second visit and the inconvenience of wearing a temporary for two weeks. Strong, well-fitting, and completed in a single visit.

Implant Crowns

When restoring a dental implant, we place a custom Zirconia crown over the implant abutment. This completes the implant restoration with a tooth-colored, metal-free crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth. No dark metal edges at the gumline.

Please note: We do not place metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns, or gold crowns. Our practice is committed to metal-free, biocompatible dentistry – full stop.

Replacing Old Metal or PFM Crowns

Many patients come to us with aging metal or PFM crowns that are starting to cause problems. Over time, old metal crowns can:

  • Develop a dark or gray line at the gumline as gum tissue recedes
  • Cause sensitivity from metal expansion and contraction with temperature changes
  • Allow decay to develop underneath, especially at the margins
  • Chip or fracture at the porcelain surface, exposing the metal substructure
  • Cause sensitivity or reactions in patients with metal sensitivities

We can evaluate your existing crowns and, when replacement is warranted, remove them carefully and replace with modern Zirconia restorations. For patients concerned about exposure during the removal of old metal-containing crowns, we take precautions modeled after mercury-safe and metal-safe protocols – including rubber dam isolation, high-volume evacuation, and sectioning techniques to minimize particulate release.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, Zirconia crowns typically last 15 to 25 years or longer. The longevity of a crown depends on your oral hygiene, bite forces, and whether you grind your teeth. We will let you know if a night guard is recommended to protect your investment. Regular checkups allow us to monitor the crown and catch any issues early.
Is getting a crown painful?
The preparation appointment is done under local anesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity in the days following preparation is normal, particularly to temperature. Once the final crown is bonded, most patients report feeling comfortable and natural within a short adjustment period. We take care to make every step of the process as comfortable as possible.
Can I get a crown in one day?
Yes – for qualifying cases, we offer same-day Zirconia crowns milled in-office. After the tooth is prepared and digitally scanned, your crown is designed and fabricated while you wait. You leave with a permanent, bonded Zirconia crown in a single appointment. Not every clinical situation is suited for same-day fabrication, and we will let you know during your consultation whether it is the right approach for your tooth.
What is the difference between Zirconia and ceramic crowns?
Zirconia is technically a type of ceramic – it is a crystalline oxide ceramic known for exceptional strength and biocompatibility. All-ceramic crowns (such as lithium disilicate, commonly known by the brand E.max) offer the highest aesthetic translucency, making them ideal for front teeth. Zirconia is typically preferred for back teeth due to its superior fracture resistance under heavy bite forces, though modern high-translucency Zirconia can be used in the anterior as well. We will recommend the best material for your specific tooth and goals.
Does insurance cover dental crowns?
Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown treatment when it is considered medically necessary – typically 50% after your deductible is met, up to your annual maximum. Coverage can vary based on your plan and the reason for the crown. Our team will review your benefits before treatment and provide a clear estimate of your out-of-pocket costs so there are no surprises. We also offer financing options for patients who need them.
Can you replace my old metal crown with a tooth-colored one?
Yes. If your existing metal or PFM crown is failing, showing decay at the margins, causing sensitivity, or simply something you would like replaced for health or aesthetic reasons, we can remove it and restore the tooth with a new Zirconia crown. We use careful removal techniques to minimize your exposure during the process. A consultation and X-rays will allow us to evaluate the underlying tooth and give you a full picture of what the replacement would involve.
