What we clean and why it matters
A Cleaning That Goes Beyond the Surface
A professional dental cleaning removes what your toothbrush and floss simply cannot. Even with perfect home hygiene, plaque hardens into tartar in certain areas — particularly along the gumline and between teeth — and once it calcifies, it can only be removed with professional instruments. Our hygienists perform thorough scaling to remove tartar deposits from all surfaces of your teeth, including below the gumline where it matters most for gum health.
We use biocompatible, non-toxic products throughout every cleaning. Fluoride-free polishing options are available for patients who prefer to avoid fluoride — simply let us know before your appointment. We also offer ozone therapy as an adjunct to cleaning: ozone is a powerful, natural antimicrobial agent that reduces bacteria in periodontal pockets and supports healing of inflamed gum tissue without chemicals.
Our appointments are never rushed. We take the time to clean carefully, check for anything that has changed since your last visit, and give you personalized guidance on areas where your home care could be improved. We believe the hygiene appointment is one of the most important visits you can make — both for your oral health and for catching problems before they become expensive.
For most patients, we recommend a professional cleaning every six months. If you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease or show signs of active gum inflammation, we may recommend a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) followed by more frequent maintenance appointments — typically every three to four months. We’ll always explain our reasoning and help you understand what your gums need to stay healthy long-term.
Common Questions
What patients ask about dental cleanings
How often should I get a professional cleaning?
Every six months is the standard recommendation for patients with healthy gums. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, or have other risk factors, we may recommend cleanings every three to four months to stay ahead of active inflammation. We'll assess your gum health at each visit and adjust as needed.
Do you use fluoride during cleanings?
We offer fluoride-free polishing options for patients who prefer them. Simply let us know when you book or at the start of your appointment. We respect your choices and will never pressure you into accepting any product you're not comfortable with.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular prophylaxis cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and just below the gumline in healthy or mildly inflamed gums. A deep cleaning — known as scaling and root planing — goes further beneath the gumline to remove deposits from the root surfaces and smooth them to discourage bacteria from reattaching. Deep cleanings are recommended when gum pockets are significantly deeper than healthy ranges.
Can I get a cleaning if I have sensitive teeth?
Yes. Sensitivity is very common, and our hygienists are skilled at working gently with patients who experience discomfort. We can use numbing gel, adjust our technique, and take extra time to ensure the experience is as comfortable as possible. Please tell us about your sensitivity before we start — it helps us plan accordingly.
Do you offer ozone therapy during cleanings?
Yes. Ozone is a naturally occurring antimicrobial agent that we use as an adjunct to professional cleanings. It's delivered as an ozone-infused water rinse or gas that kills harmful bacteria in periodontal pockets and supports tissue healing — without any harsh chemicals. It's a gentle, effective complement to our biocompatible approach and is available to any patient who is interested.
