Dentistry Without the Dread
Dental anxiety is real, extremely common, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Tens of millions of Americans avoid dental care because of fear — and that avoidance leads to bigger problems, more complicated treatment, and more anxiety. We understand this cycle, and we’ve built our practice to break it. We don’t rush, we don’t dismiss your concerns, and we don’t proceed until you’re ready. When that’s still not enough, we have nitrous oxide sedation.
Nitrous oxide — commonly called laughing gas — is a colorless, odorless gas inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. Within a few minutes, most patients notice a pleasant sense of relaxation, warmth, and mild euphoria. The world slows down a little, anxiety fades, and the treatment can proceed without the white-knuckle grip on the armrest. You remain fully conscious throughout the procedure and can communicate with us at any time.
Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients who experience: general dental anxiety or phobia, a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult, high tooth sensitivity, needle phobia, or difficulty sitting still for longer procedures. It’s also a useful option when we’re completing multiple treatments in a single visit and want to keep you comfortable throughout. The sedation is adjustable throughout your appointment — we can dial the level up or down as needed.
One of the biggest advantages of nitrous oxide over other sedation options is how quickly it clears your system. Within five to ten minutes of removing the mask, the effects dissipate completely and you’re clear to drive yourself home. There’s no grogginess, no lingering impairment, and no need to arrange a ride. It’s safe for adults and children alike and has one of the longest safety records of any sedation agent in medicine.
Common Questions
What patients ask about sedation dentistry
What is nitrous oxide sedation?
Nitrous oxide is a safe, well-established sedation gas that is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose during your dental procedure. It produces a feeling of relaxation and mild euphoria while keeping you fully awake and responsive. It has been used in dentistry for over 150 years and has an excellent safety record for patients of all ages.
Will I be unconscious during sedation?
No. Nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation — you remain awake, aware of your surroundings, and able to communicate with us throughout your appointment. You'll simply feel much more relaxed and at ease than you would without it. If you have questions or want us to stop at any point, you can tell us, and we will respond immediately.
Can children receive sedation?
Yes. Nitrous oxide is safe and commonly used for children who experience anxiety, have difficulty sitting still, or need a procedure that would be difficult to complete otherwise. We adjust the concentration appropriately for smaller patients, and children typically tolerate it very well. We will discuss whether sedation is appropriate for your child based on their age, health history, and the procedure planned.
How quickly does nitrous oxide wear off?
Very quickly — typically within five to ten minutes after the mask is removed. We'll administer pure oxygen at the end of your appointment to help flush the nitrous oxide from your system. Most patients feel completely back to normal within fifteen minutes, which is one of the main advantages of nitrous oxide over oral or IV sedation options.
Will I need someone to drive me home after sedation?
No — that's one of the biggest advantages of nitrous oxide over other sedation methods. Because the gas clears your system so quickly, you'll be safe to drive yourself home after your appointment. You don't need to arrange a ride or take the rest of the day off. This makes nitrous oxide a practical, low-barrier option for busy patients who want to feel more comfortable during treatment.
